Crkvenjak Lake – Bistrik: An Untouched Natural Gem in the Heart of Kakanj

Crkvenjak Lake – Bistrik consists of three water surfaces surrounded by a rich variety of plant and animal life. More than 212 bird species, 122 plant species, 30 species of dragonflies, eight amphibian species, seven reptile species, and 13 mammal species have been recorded in this area. Many of these species are legally protected and rare, which gives the locality exceptional importance in preserving the natural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Migratory birds frequently use this wetland as a resting point during their seasonal journeys, making it especially valuable for ornithologists and birdwatching enthusiasts.
Peace, Silence, and Natural Harmony
Despite its proximity to inhabited areas, Crkvenjak Lake – Bistrik offers a sense of complete peace and isolation. During spring and summer, when the water reflects the surrounding landscapes, this location becomes an ideal place for relaxation, walking, nature photography, and escaping everyday stress. Increasing numbers of visitors — both from Kakanj and other cities — come here on weekends, and the area is also becoming increasingly popular among cyclists.

The Municipality of Kakanj has already initiated activities aimed at officially declaring the locality a protected natural area. Although certain administrative challenges still exist, it is expected that these obstacles will soon be resolved so that this natural treasure receives the recognition and protection it truly deserves.
