The Tower of Hadži Muhamed-beg in Ribnica – A Valuable National Monument of Kakanj
The Tower of Hadži Muhamed-beg in Ribnica, also known as the “Turkish Court,” is located in the village of Ribnica, on the slopes of Piljevina Hill, just 4 kilometers west of Kakanj. This unique monument of rich history forms an important part of the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been declared a national monument.
Location and Significance
Ribnica is a settlement named after the river of the same name in Montenegro, in memory of the homeland of Hadži Omer-beg Delibaša, the ancestor of Hadži Muhamed-beg Delibaša. The tower is situated on the right bank of the Ribnica River, in a naturally strategic location that played an important role in local administration and justice throughout the centuries.
History of the Building
The tower was built by Hadži Muhamed-beg, the last qadi (judge) of the Vranduk Fortress and a military dignitary. Judicial affairs and ceremonial events, including weddings, were held within this building. Throughout history, the tower witnessed numerous political and social changes, yet it preserved its status as an important cultural and architectural monument dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Architecture and Spatial Layout
The tower consists of a basement, a ground floor with a kitchen and open hearth, and an upper floor with multiple rooms. Within the complex there were also two storage buildings — one used as a prison and the other as a stable. The structure was divided into a male section (selamluk) and a female section (haremluk), and surrounded by a spacious courtyard enclosed by stone walls and loopholes, reflecting its multifunctional role and importance within the local community.

The Tower of Hadži Muhamed-beg in Ribnica has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its protection and preservation are of exceptional importance for the cultural heritage of Kakanj and the wider region.
