Ponijeri – The Mountain Oasis of Kakanj

The name Ponijeri originates from the word “ponor” or “sinking,” which perfectly reflects the area’s natural characteristics. In several locations, visitors can observe sinkholes — karst phenomena where water disappears underground. As early as the period after the Second World War, researchers conducted water-flow tests by coloring streams, confirming that the water sinking in the center of Ponijeri reappears as natural springs further down the valley.

Access and Road Connections
Ponijeri can be reached from Kakanj via four different routes:
- Through Kraljeva Sutjeska
- Through the valley of the Ribnica River
- Along the Mala Rijeka route via Jehići
- And the shortest route, approximately 20 kilometers long, following the Zgošća River through Tršće and Paočina
Thanks to investments in infrastructure, the roads are paved and regularly maintained, allowing access throughout all seasons.
