Bočica – A Hidden Oasis of Nature Above Kakanj
The name Bočica may not sound particularly familiar at first, nor immediately evoke vivid images. But if you decide to search for it on a map or set out to visit it, you will discover a hidden destination that offers an escape from everyday life and the complete tranquility of nature.
This excursion site belongs to the municipality of Kakanj and is located just 10 kilometers from the town center, at an altitude of 920 meters above sea level. Situated on the northwestern slopes of Mount Zvijezda, Bočica overlooks the town and the surrounding meadows and hills. It can be reached via the road through Zagrađe and Halinovići, with clear signposts guiding visitors to the destination.
The Bočica Mountain Lodge, managed by the Mountaineering Society “Bobovac,” offers everything needed for a comfortable stay in nature: accommodation capacity, a common lounge area, kitchen facilities, a traditional outdoor pavilion (šadrvan), benches, and well-maintained sports grounds for basketball, football, and volleyball. The complex is perfectly suited for visitors of all generations.
The lodge terrace provides a breathtaking panoramic view — on clear days, the sight stretches all the way to the peaks of Vlašić Mountain. The surrounding area is covered by a mixed forest of coniferous and deciduous trees, creating an atmosphere of peace and natural seclusion.
Bočica is also known as a gathering place for sports team preparations, hiking events, and larger outdoor meetings. It once hosted the “Mountaineers’ Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” which brought together more than a thousand visitors. During the summer months, it also becomes home to the Kakanj Demo Fest, a music event that has attracted young people from many different cities.
One of Bočica’s greatest advantages is its connection to numerous tourist, cultural, and historical sites. It lies near the road leading to Ponijeri Ski Center, while its hiking trails are interconnected with the village of Nažbilj, the royal medieval town of Bobovac, and Kraljeva Sutjeska.
For enthusiasts of mountain biking and motocross riding, the route Kakanj – Vukanovići – Bočica – Žitelj – Haljinići is highly recommended. It offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Kakanj region and connects the locality with the protected wetland area of Bistrik.
